The nose, in section

Every symptom has a source

Sneezing
  • Repeated bouts of sneezing, often first thing in the morning
  • Itching in the nose, eyes or throat alongside it
  • Set off by dust, pollen or a change of season

What we look for in clinic

The lining of the nose for the pale, swollen look allergy leaves, and what in your surroundings sets it off.

Runny nose
  • A clear discharge that keeps coming back
  • Usually together with sneezing and itching
  • Worse around dust, pollen or a seasonal change

What we look for in clinic

Whether the discharge is clear or thick, one side or both — the two point in different directions.

Stuffy nose
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • A stuffiness that does not clear with the usual measures
  • Breathing through the mouth, and waking with a dry mouth

What we look for in clinic

The septum, the turbinates and the lining of the nose — and, with an endoscope, anything further back that should not be there.

Facial pressure
  • Pressure or pain across the cheeks, forehead or between the eyes
  • Congestion with thick nasal discharge
  • A heaviness that comes with, or follows, a cold

What we look for in clinic

Which sinuses are involved and whether they are draining — examination first, imaging only if it will change the plan.

Nosebleed
  • Bleeding from one or both nostrils
  • Most settle with simple first aid at home
  • Some return often, or are hard to stop

What we look for in clinic

Where the bleeding point actually is, the state of the septum, and anything that makes bleeding more likely.

Can't smell
  • Smell reduced, or things smelling different from before
  • Often follows a cold, allergies or a blocked nose
  • Taste can seem flat at the same time

What we look for in clinic

Whether the airway to the smell area is simply blocked, or the sense itself has been affected — they are managed differently.

02 — What to look for

What are you experiencing?

  • Blocked nose

A blocked or stuffy nose can come from a cold, allergies, or structural causes inside the nose.

Worth a checkA blockage that's persistent, one-sided, or doesn't respond to usual measures is worth a clinical look.

  • Nasal allergies

Nasal allergies cause sneezing, itching, a runny or blocked nose, often triggered by dust, pollen, or seasonal changes.

Worth a checkSymptoms that disrupt sleep or daily life despite home measures are worth discussing with a doctor.

  • Sinus problems

Sinus problems can cause facial pressure, pain, congestion, and thick nasal discharge.

Worth a checkSymptoms lasting more than ten days, or that are severe or recurring, are reasons to seek care.

  • Nosebleeds

Most nosebleeds are minor and settle with simple first aid.

Worth a checkFrequent, heavy, or hard-to-stop nosebleeds, or ones with no obvious cause, need a medical review.

  • Smell changes

A reduced or altered sense of smell can follow a cold, allergies, or nasal blockage, among other causes.

Worth a checkSmell loss that persists after other symptoms clear, or comes on suddenly, is worth having assessed.

Treatments & procedures
