04 — What to look for

What are you experiencing?

  • Dizziness

Dizziness is a broad term covering light-headedness, unsteadiness, or a spinning feeling, and can have inner-ear, neurological, or other causes.

Worth a checkDizziness that is sudden, severe, or comes with other symptoms such as weakness or slurred speech needs urgent attention.

  • Loss of balance

Difficulty keeping steady while standing or walking can stem from the inner ear, nervous system, or other causes.

Worth a checkBalance problems that are new or getting worse, especially with a fall risk, are worth a prompt evaluation.

  • Spinning sensations

A spinning sensation, often called vertigo, is frequently linked to the inner ear's balance system.

Worth a checkEpisodes that are severe, recurring, or accompanied by hearing changes or nausea are reasons to seek care.

  • Feeling unsteady

A general sense of unsteadiness, without true spinning, can still affect daily activities and fall risk.

Worth a checkOngoing or worsening unsteadiness is worth a clinical assessment.

How it works

From first visit to a plan

  1. Consult

    What it feels like

We go through what the dizziness feels like, how long each episode lasts, what sets it off, and any hearing change or medication that could be involved.

  2. Examination

    Bedside and positional testing

A vestibular examination at the bedside, positional testing where the history points to it, and a hearing assessment when it is indicated.

  3. Diagnosis

    Peripheral, central, or mixed

You are told plainly which it is and what that means, rather than being handed a label without an explanation.

  4. Treatment

    A plan for your cause

Repositioning manoeuvres, vestibular rehabilitation, medical management, or onward referral where the cause sits outside ENT.

Treatments & procedures

Treatment for vertigo and balance conditions is decided after an in-person evaluation, and can range from monitoring and medical management to minor procedures or surgery when appropriate.
